Hard to believe that it’s nearly 2019. I have to say that’s been a very busy year and next year promises to be even more so. On behalf of the Board I would like to wish all of you a very happy and safe holiday season and we look forward to welcoming you to all the awesome events we have planned for 2019. We have our National Symposium in Melbourne this year and we have already stated preparations. More to come in 2019.

Communities of Practice
Some of you may be aware that in October 2018 our annual planning day was held. This was attended by Board Members, SIG Convenors and Regional Groups Secretaries and our Newsletter editor. At this meeting discussion centred around the concept of Communities of Practice and its relevance to how Environmental Health Professionals work. As a result of these discussions, early in the new year EHPA will be launching Communities of Practice to replace our current SIGS’s and Regional Groups. `
Communities of Practice are groups of people who share a common passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.
There are 3 components to a Community of Practice:
- The Domain – a shared area of interest
- The Community – joint activities, discussions and relationship building.
- The Practice – Membership of practitioners – people who are actively involved in the area of interest.
The purpose of each Community of Practice is to provide important information transfer and networking opportunities for EHPA members through discussion, resource sharing and problem solving. The focus is on recognition of knowledge – building the knowledge base, identifying knowledge gaps and using knowledge to problem solve.
